Urban Public Journal

About

Urban Public Journal is an independent editorial publication about the shared places of city life. It looks at how streets, squares, parks and civic places are laid out, encountered and understood, with an eye for the trade-offs hidden in ordinary design decisions.

What we cover

Our subjects include routes through a square, the position of a bench, the cues at a building entrance and the balance between passing through and staying awhile. We focus on public space as people meet it, not on grand claims about what a city ought to be.

Who it is for

The publication is for curious city readers: people who notice the arrangement of a street or wonder why one public place feels easy to use while another does not. No specialist vocabulary is required, and we do not offer professional planning, legal or safety advice.

How we look

We compare design choices, explain their likely purposes and name what each may leave out. A place can serve several functions at once, and a feature that helps one use may hinder another. We aim to make those tensions legible rather than declare a single winning formula.
